Dieting? Drink Up!
Many Americans have been on a diet at one point or another. And it’s pretty safe to say that at some point most of us have heard that caffeine aids in weight loss. The question is, can that claim be backed up?
Dutch researchers seem to think it can. They’ve found that people who followed a calorie-restricted diet and got 300 milligrams of caffeine from coffee(about 2 1/2 cups) daily for four weeks lost a pound more per week than those who didn’t. The January issue of Shape Magazine declared it a fact that “drinking three 8 oz. cups of caffeinated coffee will burn about 50 extra calories a day; six 8 oz cups of tea will burn about 25 extra.”
The Mayo Clinic website agrees that drinking caffeine can aid in weight-loss, but states however, that caffeine alone will not shed those pounds. The verdict? Sounds to me like we should eat sensably, workout regularly, and keep drinking our coffee! Although, I’m sure the caffeine claim goes flying out the window if that caffeine comes from a sugar and heavy cream ladden cup of coffee or a venti whole milk latte. Everything in moderation, isn’t that the saying?
Drink up and eat right!
