Boot-up and Log-in

Remember how I said that Boca Java sent me a huge package to try their coffees? Well, I’m making my way through them. This past week, I’ve set the roaster aside, and focused on trying out two new blends before they are past their prime: Bloggers Fuel Boot-up Blend and Late-Night Login. These are two very different cups.

Late-night Login ($5.95 for 8 oz) beans glisten with velvety oil, roasted to a very dark French roast. I ground a wee-bit courser due to the oil (oily beans can sometimes clog up the grinder on too fine of a grind), but still got beautiful liquid chocolate crema. One sip of the shot, and I knew I was in for a treat. These beans, a blend from South America and Hawaiian, yielded a deep dark flavor, peppered with hints of almond and vanilla.

My pulls with Boot-up Blend ($6.75 for 8oz), on the other hand, were a disaster. This blend is a medium-dark roast, and shows just a touch of oil in the combination of beans from Africa, Central and South America. Even after trying a variety of grinds, each cup was bitter with hints of burnt rubber. These beans were probably meant for drip coffee rather than espresso.
