Gourmet Coffee For Our G.I.’s

For soldiers stationed at Camp Schwab in Okinawa lattes and cappuccinos are a lot easier to come by these days. It used to be that soldiers had to drive at least one hour to Camp Courtney if they wanted a cup of gourmet coffee, but as of Friday that’s all changed now. Friday marked the opening of Camp Schwab’s very own coffee house appropriately named Schwabucks.

Schwabucks will serve free coffee to servicemembers from 6-8pm on Wednesdays and from 6-11pm on Fridays. The coffeehouse was opened to give servicemembers a place to relax in an alcohol-free environment and take part in fellowship and spirituality. The idea came about when Brig. Gen. Mastin M. Robeson, 3rd Marine Division commanding general saw a similar coffeehouse setup at a camp in Djibouti. Lt. David Thames, the 4th Marines chaplain, who also helped establish Schwabucks, said the coffeehouse would not have been possible without donations from the Marine Corps Thrift Club and the American Women’s Welfare Association. Thames said, “It’s just not possible to get an espresso machine through military channels.”
