And The Pumpkin Craze Continues

It doesn’t seem to matter where you get your lattes and espressos, this fall chances are pretty good that you’ll likely find some sort of pumpkin drink on the menu. Starbucks seemed to kick off the craze with their Pumpkin Spice Lattes several years ago, and Caribou Coffee has their Pumpkin Spice Coffee Steamer, while other places are serving up pumpkin pie lattes or some similar variation.

I don’t know about you, but when I find something I like so much that I catch myself craving it I want to find a way to make it at home myself. A while back we shared with you a recipe that uses canned pumpkin. And while delicious, I decided to look further because I don’t tend to keep canned pumpkin on hand, and I’m pretty sure there’s no actual pumpkin in the Pumpkin Spice Latte ordered up at Starbucks.

“Pumpkin” Spice Latte

2 shots espresso
approximately 6-7 oz milk, heated and frothed
2 tsp sweetened condensed milk
2 tsp pumpkin pie spice
whipped cream
additional pumpkin pie spice for sprinkling on top

Place sweetened condensed milk and 2 tsp pumpkin pie spice into mug. Add espresso shots and heated milk, stir to combine. Spoon desired amount of foam on top of drink. Top drink with whipped cream and a sprinkling of pumpkin pie spice.

*Adjust the amount of sweetened condensed milk to taste. You can also use freshly brewed coffee in place of the espresso shots if desired.

[…] I have designed this month’s “Designated Driver Drink” to do at least double duty: provide a decadent drink that starts off the Thanksgiving holiday with a turbo-caloric bang (something we all need right?) and satisfy the pumpkin pie craving. There is nothing light, dainty, or delicate about this drink. It is meant to be deeply satisfying in a purely hedonistic way. The use of pumpkin as a drink base is practically a mandatory meme in the food blogosphere these days. A Nice Cuppa has a similar coffee based drink, give it a try! […]
