DIY Coffee Pods

I’ve wondered to myself time and again why people buy the coffee makers that require those individual serving coffee pods.  I get that using the pods is quicker and easier.  You want one cup of coffee, you stick one pod in the coffee maker and there you go.  No measuring, no filters to mess with, no wet soggy grinds to throw away later.  Just one small little pod to toss in the trash.

But what about the economics aspect of it all?  The pods are convenient, but are they worth the higher price you pay?  Not to mention, you don’t have nearly as many brand and blend choices with the commercial coffee pods.  And you certainly don’t have the freshness and flavor that many of us crave.  If we’re going to drink it we might as well enjoy it right?

There’s a gadget out now called The Perfect Pod which allows you to make your own coffee pods.  You insert pre-cut pod papers into the gizmo which heat-seals them together creating a pod once you’ve added your perfect amount of your favorite coffee.  The Perfect Pod makes pods for most brands including Melitta, Senseo and Hamilton Beach to name a few.  The gadget costs about $40 and comes with a starter set of 40 pods.

The coffee pods are a perfect example of extreme overpackaging for minimal convenience. Maybe the “do-it-yourself” pods are environmentally friendly, but the normal ones create a lot of garbage. If you buy a classic two-cup espresso maker, you can make individual cups without having any pods at all.

You bring up a good point about all the extra garbage the store-bought pods creates. The DIY pods would surely eliminate much of that. I’m still not sure the pods would be worth it for me. Afterall, you’re either paying more money or you’re taking up time making the pods, and most likely you were trying to save time by using the pods, so isn’t your initial intent defeated?
