30 Year Old Beans For Sale In Brazil

Brazil has some pretty interesting plans brewing.  The Brazilian government is making plans to sell all that is left of their federal coffee stocks, which would mean selling beans that are nearly 30 years old.  At a recent public auction the Brazilian government sold 40,000 bags of coffee, nearly all of which were from the 1977-78 harvest.  The 60 kg bags sold for $167 per bag, so you can imagine the 30 year old beans will bring a pretty penny.

Those of us who are coffee drinkers know that within a few hours of brewing coffee can turn too bitter to drink.  Apparently though, unroasted beans can last around 30 years if they have been stored properly.  The beans will begin to yellow, but the flavor is not  effected as long as the beans have been stored well-kept in the warehouse.

I’m not sure how I would feel about drinking 30 year old coffee.  But, maybe unroasted coffee beans are like wine - they get better with time?  Then again, I’m not a wine drinker so I’ll never know if that’s actual true of wine or not.  Hopefully the auctions will continue to be profitable and the Brazilian government will use the money to help the growers.
