Hot Mexican Coffee in Houston

hugo_ortega_new.jpgSouthern Living magazine recently ran a piece on grabbing celebratory drinks while on the go this holiday season.  One of the drinks they featured was Hot Mexican Coffee from a place called Hugo’s in Houston.  It’s one of chef/owner Hugo Ortega’s popular traditions, and, as they described it, is “coffee infused with Mexican cinnamon, piloncillo (an unrefined sugar), and cocoa beans from Oaxaca, Mexico” that are ground in the restaurant’s kitchen.

But how does it taste?  Like a mixture of “caramel, chocolate and coffee with a smidgen of orange.”  Sounds like the perfect way to kick off the upcoming cold holiday season, doesn’t it?

While there, they also suggest the lechero, “a steamy drink of coffee and two kinds of milk poured into a glass simultaneously or ponche, a punch of apple juice, guava, sugarcane and cinnamon.”  Divine.
